How to become a professional Wedding Planner?

Do I need any training, should I work in an agency first? I am currently an Advertising/Marketing major, but I want to be a Wedding planner, I would love to open my own business, but I am afraid I don't have the network nor the money, any ideas?

Well, you need to start by getting experience event/Wedding planning. By working for someone else first you'll:
1. Get the contacts you need to be successful
2. Learn how the business actually works
3. Save the money you need (or meet partners to invest) to start your own company

At first, you might even have to, gasp, work for free. The more experience you have the more likely you are to get hired.

Start off as an even planner or banquet manager for a hotel and you will get the training you need.

Ask your guidance counselor/major advisor at school – they may be able to point you in the right direction. If your college offers Hospitality majors/minors or classes, I would look into that as well. Look into internships, too – maybe at a hotel, banquet facility, photographer, event planning company or with another wedding planner.

Hotel catering is a good place to start. The only way to do a good wedding planner is tons of experience. I go to school with a bunch of event management majors (only school in the country that offers a BS in it) who want to be wedding planners but even with their degree they will need years of experience. Really you need to find a planner that will mentor you, be their assistant, do a lot of the crummy work, make almost no money. Not the most glamorous thing but thats how you get the experience to get great.
